Angels in America, and other Gay/Transgender themes …

From the netflix blurb about Angels in America,

"Angels is at once heartbreaking and funny as it examines the first few years (the mid-1980s) of the AIDS epidemic against the moral absolutism and unresponsive backdrop of the Reagan Administration."

It truely is a great human story. Amazing cast. Oddly enough, gay/transgender themed movies I’ve seen in recent years (Boys Don’t Cry, Before night falls, Fire, Transamerica, & the more popular Brokeback Mountain) were all very strong and extremely well done movies about love – Much more so than most heterosexual love stories I’ve seen on the big screen lately. Maybe heterosexual love is getting a bit jaded and/or out of fashion these days and screenwriters and directors don’t find it as interesting to work with. I mean, how many ways can you spin the typical girl/boy love story or the man cheats woman theme after almost a century of movie making (has it been that long)?

Highly recommended. Even for those few odd friends of mine who have a thing or two against merryl streep. Watch all of the above if you can!

Cashback (2006, Independant)

"After his girlfriend dumps him, insomniac art student Ben takes a supermarket night-shift job and deals with his boredom by pretending he can stop time –a tactic that reveals life’s hidden beauty and draws him to the intriguing checkout girl." – Okay, that’s straight from the netflix DVD jacket. What do I think? It’s a funny, romantic story. Lot’s of nudity. Nudity like only a young swedish blonde could deliver in slow motion, but in a pre-adolecent boy-ish manner. Tan fell asleep towards the end though I dont think that is any indication of the quality of the movie. I woke her up at 12.30 am and tried to convince her that she should really see it again but that got her in a not so happy mood. I need to pick my timing better on these kind of pursuations. Rent it here.

Deux Jours à Paris (2007, U.S.A)

One of the filthiest films about Paris, now playing at the Harvard Exit in Seattle. The main actress, as the script discusses, has gotten a bit fat in the approximate area of her bottom, but the dialogue is classic and extremely funny. So funny that many people who were siting around us (I believe) were having a hard time deciding whether to laugh out loud or be quiet in embaressment :-) Very recommended! If you don’t catch in a theatre, you can rent it here.

Russian Dolls (2005)

A story about choices, confusion and hope – Do you keep opening them up until you’ve got the last one? See it here. If you didn’t see the first in this series, L’Auberge Espagnole is good too.

Darwin’s Nightmare (2004, France/Austria/Belgium)

Darwin’s Nightmare is a tale about humans between the North and the South, about globalization, and about fish. An eye opening documentary about the human condition. At times funny. Always shocking. Very sad. http://www.darwinsnightmare.com/ (rent it on netflix)

Fast food nation (2006, USA)

A good sunday afternoon movie – Makes me think again about going to places like the Buenos Aires Grill, or the Dixies on 45th, or even the Red Mill Burgers on phinney ave. It’s a cruel world, but I am not ready to become a vegeration yet :-( Rent it, and you just might.

Das Leben der Anderen (2006, Germany)

Translates to "The Lives of Others". A little bit dragged on at the end, but with a purpose. Great acting overall. If you liked "Goodbye Lenin", you must see this one too! http://www.sonyclassics.com/thelivesofothers/

Stranger than Fiction (2006, U.S.A.)

I started watching this on the plane because there was nothing better to watch — And then I really loved it. Unfortunately the plane landed before the movie ended, so I had to go home and rent it. It’s the story about a man called Harold Crick, and his wrist watch. Well, okay, that’s how it started. The wrist watch kinda got side tracked as the author started to focus on killing Mr. Crick. Great Tax time movie. Cute. Funny (not in the typical Will Farrel humor though). I’m sure your wife/gf will like it too :-) Did I say that baker woman was kinda cute? Well, that’s the best I’ve ever seen anyone do with the line "Eat your cookie!"

A Good Year (2006, USA)

A bit of a flop, they should’ve named it ‘a not so good year’ instead. To quote Tan, ‘Russell Crowe should stick to roles where he has to wear those roman kilts or professorial suites. He simply does not come off well as a wall street type’. Nice french country side scenary though, including the female cast.

Edmond (2005, U.S.A)

Edmond‘ is a movie that borderlines being good & crazy. William H. Macy plays a 47yr old man leaving his marriage and embarking on a journey in search of the perfect physical and spiritual companion. Funny, in a sort of strange way.

Delicatessen (1991, France)

"Gentle clown Louison moves into an apartment building with a deli on the ground floor and falls for the butcher’s daughter, Julie. It’s soon discovered that Julie’s father is actually butchering people and selling the meat to tenants. At a crossroads, Julie must decide whether to remain loyal to her father or expose him to save Louison from becoming the next entree"

A must see classic.
