Migrating to Yelp!

I’m sorry to say this, but spaces is pretty much dead. So I moved all my restaurent stuff to Yelp! instead.

Grape juice .. well, sort of …

So, we were in the bay area over the weekend (biometric requirements make it necessary to go there in person for EU visa) and the weather was really nice, we decided to drive around sonoma county with Rosh & Ivy .. and we managed to fill up a box of wine :-) Since the bidding (below) is going well, we’ll share some of this stash with the winners. Let’s see if we can push the $100 mark and I’ll consider some more interesting upgrades …

We did this a couple of years ago and to give you an idea, here’s what we served in 2004. This year should be an improvement :P

Food vs. Sex

Sex sells. If you look around, watch TV or flip through and occasionally read printed material such as magazines and newspapers, you have been the target audience of numerous advertisers using sex as a way of trying to convince you to buy their goods and services with you hard earned money. Make your rear end look sexy with that hip hugging jeans. Attract the perfect companion with that pheromone smelling perfume. Buy a mini-van to hold the offsprings of your sexual activities (um, maybe that is indirect marketting). etc. etc. And online, porn was the leading edge of ecommerce - Humans started paying for sex online way before they started buying digital cameras on amazon.com. And then there are all those ads that try to sell crappy tasting food in favor of maintaining a good looking physique. And it goes on like that …

But lately, it seems that food is taking over ‘us humans’ as the predominant recreational activity. When was the last time you ate too much of an excellent meal, went to bed and fell asleep right away before your pehromones could kick in? Maybe it’s the wine, but .. ha!

And there’s a lot more interesting food writing and pictures and videos of food on the internet nowadays than any porn site could dream to muster. Everybody is writing about what they ate last night (and I am yet to come across someone doing the same for .. well, y’know) … We take pictures, we write about how the food was made, what inspired the recipe, and all that. It’s quite a phenomenon (just in case you haven’t noticed). Travel I think is the only other contender, but it’s usually pictures most of the time.

I think I got a bit side tracked — When I started writing this entry, what I really wanted to do was to put a link to this food blog from a friend. She wants to create a forum where people can share new ways of eating good, healthy food. Particularly, since she has recently moved to Seattle, she is focusing on what’s local. Small goverment. Slow food. etc. Here’s the link http://thedailyspecial.wordpress.com/

Returning to Oaxaca

We went to Oaxaca again last night, after about 6 months since last time. Maybe more … The place is as crowded as ever with colorful people and excellent food. The bartender is still there as are most of the staff. That is probably one of their secrets to success. Hire a set of people who know and care about the food and retain them. It doesn;t hurt to be located in one of the better but hidden neighborhood in Seattle and have the best interior decor for a mexican restaurent anywhere in the world too :-) Anyway, Tan had some margarita and I had the same .. wel without the ice and lemon juice. This time the bar tender didn’t ask for our IDs. He either remembered us or we now clearly look older than 35yrs (that’s the state law I think – If you do not look older than 35, you get carded). I suspect it was the latter. Then we spent the next hour or two going through several plates of their Tacos Al Pastor, a bowl of Posole, my rusual plate of Mole’ Negro and a Pork Tamale with black Mole for dessert – Yup! I mean, Yumm! It’s great to start over every once in a while. http://www.lacartadeoaxaca.com/

Bizzaro Italian Cafe

If you enjoy strange experiences and can deal with a bit of cacophony (the staff singing happy birthday to the tune of one hundred cats making mating calls), this joint has decent italian food and good italian wine. The interior decor is quite, um, strange and interesting too!

Cafe Presse

It’s amazing how many great restaurents this town has — The latest addition is Cafe Presse on 12th Ave & Madison in Seattle. Tasty bite sized french food and good wine by the pichet. And the interior is designed really well (I’m starting to notice this more since my last visit to the redesigned Matt’s). So much good food. So little time to eat. Sigh! http://www.cafepresseseattle.com/ Oh, and did I mention they are open till 2am? That puts them easily at the very top of the best late night eateries in Seattle! Period.

“Padi”, The best Indonesian food in town

It’s the best indonesian food in town. Period! Padi is a small place which looks like it is mostly a take out place, but the chef, woman in her 40-60′s (yeah, its a bit hard to tell) makes wonderfully authentic meals for a very reasonable price. Originally from china, she live most of her life in Java and did catering for several companies/factories there. The Rendang (beef stew) and Perkedel Jagun (corn fritter) were ecellent and the Telor & Teron Balado (Hard boiled eggs with eggplant and chili) was my personal favorite. We also ordered one of the whole fish in house special chili souce (Ikan Balado) but the others ate all of it, so I have to go there again and order one just for myself. And I’ve got to try their special oxtail soup the next time as well … They are located in Seattle, at 5004 University Way NE.

p.s. Ben you’ve got to go there next time. It’s quite a difference compared to Chameleon in Dublin :-)

Max in the Market, formerly Matt’s

Matt’s got redone. It expanded both left and right, now there are 3 large windows facing the market and another one on the side .. lots of light. Lots of window seating. Lots of people. And not one familiar face. That was my first impression. Tan got us a reservation, and since we were early, we sat at the far side of the bar where we could get a full sweeping view of the new action while we got started on a rose from luberon. It had been almost 90 degrees earlier in the day, and seemed like the right thing to do (have a rose). The woman at the bar was young-ish, atractive and very serious looking. Maybe very focussed. Maybe it was because she has no time to look around and had a lot of work to do instead. If she was not pouring drinks, she was loading glasses into the plastic racks and loading them into the industrial dishwasher behind the bar. When she turned it on, the machine sent a gentle vibration which that can be felt while sitting at the bar. Depending on how you feel towards vibrating devices, this may or may not be to your liking. I felt funny. I felt like the new layout with the kitchen on one side and the bar on the other and an inverted T shaped dining space created a rather busy intersection. It definitely seemed that was when I was sitting at the bar. There were many more wait staff than before (and probably needed) and they were running around like busy bees, I was wondering if that would somehow get in the way of people relaxing and enjoying their dinner. And there was a rather chubby guy in worn out khaki shorts and a white t-shirt, carrying a clipboard and a pen and standing rather oddly among the diners. I think he was trying to to figure out which tables were free and perhaps trying to plan out how to allocate them to the people who were waiting outside to be seated. The places was buzzing for sure … Perhaps his task was further complicated by the interted T layout (he cannot for sure see how things are going from near the entrace …) Anyway, time went by and we got a table for two by the corner window. I told tan that I dont like hat I see and she told me that I am just being sentimental. I think I missed the calm and relaxing service we got from the previous staff (when I asked our waitress about some of them by name, she thought for a while and indicated that none of the names ring any bells, therfore they must no longer be there. Bummer). When we aksed her how one of the dishes were made, she also had to check her notes. Hmm … let’s give her some time and see how that goes. On the plus side (for me) the menu looked pretty much the same. When the food came, the preperations were a bit different (as it should be) and it all tasted very good. And when sitting down in this corner, the staff traffic did not bother me as much either. I probably need to wipe out some of my old sentimental memories and learn to live and enjoy the present instead!

The Harvest Vine

I am not sure how I missed writing about this one – It’s best to sit around the bar or downstairs in the cozy celler. Avoid the table next to the entrace on winter months as the breeze as people go in and out can be quite distracting. And you dont want to be distracted from that signature golden beet slad. Or the Morcilla con Piquillo (a preperation of blood sausage). Or that wonderfully smooth gazpacho. I know one person who got a bit of food poisoning right after dining here, but I swear that it must have been something she ate before going to the restaurent :-) I was there again on sunday night and sampled about half of the menu (okay, maybe just over 1/3rd) and didn’t have any trouble. http://www.harvestvine.com/

Asteroid Cafe Moves South

The quirky little italian restaurent that used to be on 45th in Wallingford has moved south, to 36th in Fremont – The fake rock that used to be on the roof of the previous location has not been setup in the new place yet (and they are working on it), but the food is still good. I tried the ravioli in orange souce today for lunch. It was unexpectadly good. I mean, I liked it when I read the description on the menu, was dissapointed when I saw the actual plate, with the creamy sauce and was delighted when I took the first bite.

The new place is bigger, so you no longer have to worry about toppling people’s wine glasses as you scoot around to sit at your table. You probably won’t hear what the hoplessly romantic couple seated next to you are whispering in each other’s ear – Are they discussing the blue cheese or is it something else? It’s hard to tell from the facial expressions. You’ll never know find out, but that no reason to stop going – The food is still good! See their website for details. Say hi to Tinka while you are there.

Maekawa Bar, A japanese pub in Seattle

Down on 6th & King, located on the second floor of a building filled with japanese fantasy toy stores, a travel agency giving great fares to Tokyo and other asian destinations, and a video store stocked with anime, ‘Maekawa Bar‘ a great little japanese pub servers tasty treats and good sake. No frills, and good service. Sitting there and watching the crowd that was walking in an out, it truely felt like being in Japan. Recommended!

.~* Sitka & Spruce *~.

We found another great place to eat in Seattle – One more reason to stop paying any attention to the michellin star system ;-) Great food and warm, friendly atmosphere in a rather surprising location – a tiny strip mall off Eastlake Ave. This place serves fresh local fare in a small space that sits around 20-25 people.  There is a large communal table at the center and if you don’t have space to sit, you can always stand around the bar and eat/drink/nibble too. The Little Streets w/braised beef I had there on Saturday night was the closest to the Boeuf Bourgogne served at Le Trumilou in Paris :-) And the staff is even friendlier .. The grilled octopus salad was just perfect! The menu is a true chalk board, so I cannot gurantee the same stuff although, it’s quite unlikely that anyone will be dissapointed here .. We’ll be repeating (again) for sure.

“Dis one be the second most popular ‘bowl’ in the Caribbean, mon”

My favorite Cuban restaurent just got better – Paseo re-opened after the holiday break with an expanded menu. Yum! Here’s what I had last night:

West Caribbean Bowl $7.75
A generous portion of jasmine rice & black beans blessed w/chedder cheese, sour cream, warm salsa, jalapenos & chicken thighs. Served with love, peace and tortilla chips. Sorry, no substitutions. But they were out of chicken thighs, so they gave me a good serving of the succulant cuban roast pork shoulder :-D

I strongly encourage you to stop by and take a look. They are located on fremont avenue and 43rd (I think) .. right opposite Brad’s Swingside Cafe.

That Per Se … by Thomas Keller

I’m challenging the michelin guide and ranking system. According to them *** (3 stars) means that a restaurent is ‘worth visiting a city just to dine at it’. And we did Per Se. Umm, no, that is the actual name of the restaurent. Asela got us a reservation a couple of months ago, and we flew all the way to NY, got a place to stay, dressed up (they require jackets for men .. even those from Seattle) and went in on Sunday night. Tan and Asela went for the 9 course menu and I opted for the 7 course with a touch of foie gras added as an extra. I’m a sucker for edible fat. Anyway, they apparently no longer do the wine pairing. Wine pairing with a 9 course menu is apparently getting to be a bit too much. I disagree.

Overall, each dish that was served was a piece of art on it’s own. The colors, the presentation, the details. Flavor doesn’t appear to be the top priority though. I loved by blue prawns. The aroma of that dish was a great starter. The pan rosted fillet of pomphret was nice (like something you’d typically get at Flying Fish here in Seattle) and the foie gras was excellent .. a warm version of the dish and a bit softer than what you’d find at a typical classic french restaurent. Nonetheless, just what I wanted. The meat dish was a nicely cut lamb chop that came with a glaze of peach, and it gave me some ideas to try at home. The location itself is magnificent, sitting atop on the 4th floor overlooking the cityscape on the right side and cetral park on the left as you look out through the glass wall. The fountains and lights of the columbus circle dancing below. Sparking champagne. Neatly dresed up folks. Smiling waiters. Little touches of nice things here and there.

My gripe is that the combined effect didn’t for some reason didn’t add up to the expectation. Perhaps we’ve eaten too much (as in, we’ve been to so many different places and turned into food snobs). At least in the cases of Tan and Zilla, that is a given. They have food snob tatoos somewhere hidden on their back sides. I’m 50% sure of that. Anyway (distractions .. distractions ..) all three of us agreed that Seattle is a mighty fine place for a food snob to live in and agreed that we are lucky to have found a home there. We also agreed that Herb farm should at least get one michelin star, if not two. Herb farm is a different atmosphere, but the combined effect is probably more than the sum of it’s parts (okay they should cut the introductory crap and the tour of the herb garden).

Now the ultimate verdict. Will I recommend Per Se? Pro-bab-ly. Okay, that is not a strong yes, but it is a very unique experience. You probably won’t get some of the dishes they do anywhere else in the food world. And if you are a marrried woman living in the north west and have trouble getting your man to dress up, this is a great opportunity to do so. I had to buy two new jackets just for this occasion (that’s a funny story for another time though). So if you are an aspiring (or seasoned) food-appreciating-person, go ahead. Let us know about your experience.

Possibilities …

Tan & Asela are planning a trip to NY, to try out a bunch of restaurants. Yeah, they are the local food nazi. And they have been so kind as to invite me along (Tan is sponsoring me). This is so exciting .. I’ve been looking at some of the websites of these restaurants and the pictures of what they seem to be serving are very interesting. I’m soo looking forward to this trip … I decided to blog about it even before we bought tix. Well okay, the reservations have been made at some places already :-)

New Korean BBQ on 2nd & Lenora

Well, sort of. Last night Tan, Zilla & I went to Buenos Aires grill. While waiting to order, one of the staff came by and brought us water and chimichuri, and I told him that he is one of the few people that seem to still be working at the restaurent. In the conversation, we realized that Marco no longer owned the restaurent and it is now under new ownership. It had been the ase for about 6 months. Phew! we thought, since we had already been there a couple of time in that time and we had not really noticed a difference. Daniel, our waiter later gave us more information about the new owners. It’s a korean person (couldn’t catch if it was man, woman, couple or something else :-)

Anyway, we ordered 3 morcillas, 2 caipirinnahs, a hanger and 2 parilladas with garlic fries and .. (I forgot what else we talked about). The food and service both somehow seemed to have been kicked up a notch. The bread was a bit different, but that was about the only thing that I thought was better earlier. The caipirinnahs that were heading south last year were quite good, even Zilla ordered one half way through. There was a young asian guy walking around the tables, talking to people and also chatting up the cooks at the grill. He seems to be running the place and quite pleasent.

I think we will miss marco’s Italian/Argentinian personality and especially the lady at the door who used to give us the home-coming-like warm welcome every time we went there (how many restaurents can you name where the staff hugs you before they seat you at a table?), but I guess we can slowly get used the the new one. She looked friendly to me :-)

p.s. Marco apparently still owns Ipanema.

CAIPIRINHA (Serves 4)

Cachaça is a potent sugarcane liquor used in this Brazilian national drink. You can substitute light rum if you can’t find cachaça.

2 limes, cut in half
8 teaspoons sugar
Coarsely crushed ice
1 cup cachaça

Put a lime half in each of four tumblers, and sprinkle each with 2 teaspoons sugar. Using a wooden reamer, crush the flesh of the limes. Fill glasses with ice, and pour cachaça over it. Stir well, and serve.

A real table

Now seating …

Dinner was served

They all arrived 6.30 sharp and left around midnight. What happened inbetween was good fun -lots of wine, food good company and stories. The make-shfit dining table worked well .. maybe I should buy a real one.

Tan’s menu went something like …
- Pain de campagne (bread *g*) with home made pate / Clos du Chateau Bourgogne ’02
- Russet patato and celery root soup w/truffle oil
- Golden beet salad with chives, walnuts & goat cheese / Chataeu St Michelle Gewurztraminer ’04
- Frech cod cakes & thai curry sauce with asparagus and shitake mushrooms / Cristom Pinot Noir Reserve ’02
- Beet and ornage sorbet / Shot of Rocca San Martino Liquore di  Limoni
- Braised goat meet, ravioli (baked squash, goat cheese, chives and pine nut) and rappini / Damilano Barolo ’01
- Flan with caramalized figs & home made vanilla bean ice cream / Agaverao Licor de Tequila

Poeple were still open to the idea of more food, so we served ..
- Assorted local cheeses / Stonehedge Syrah ’02
- Genmai Cha (Japanese green tea with popped rice)

p.s. I just hope the hangovers were not too bad after all the wine and alcohol we consumed :)
