Stuck in Washington D.C., Tea Parties & how to make sense of election messages …

Missing a flight, though very annoying, has it’s benefits. Like, you get to check-in to an airport hotel, with no specific plans or place to go, and catch up on cable television. Those of you closer to us know that it had been long since we cut cable (and dish) at home.

To stay on point, I was watching political news around the upcomingelection. Technically, it’s now past midnight and today *IS* election day. And I hope you’ve already voted!

There is so much going on with these elections and U.S. politics in general. Most ordinary citizens (like yours truly) find it confusing and hard to make a call on which of these leaders have a reasonable plan for your future. And your children’s future. Or your dog, in case you don’t have kids to care for.

It could often seem like a case of he said, she said. So, what do you do?

Do you pick up a copy of the stranger magazine (a local alternative newspaper here in Seattle) and go by their recommendations – like one of my good friends did- or do you listen to your trusted friends and go with what seem like the consensus among your social circle?

You could always spend some time doing your own research – good luck with that though, and hopefully you’ve got plenty of time in your hands for that.

A simple method …

I just pay attention to the ‘head‘ of each political party – and make a call based on what you see at the top. Who’s message makes the most sense to you? Do any of them need to be stopped (because they are simply nuts)?

While watching TV in that hotel room last night, I came to the important realization that this ‘tea party’ thing is insane – seriously. Okay, I admit I hadn’t paid much attention to them until now -

For instance, look at this list of books on the Tea Party Website, which they recommend as Must Read Books for Patriots:

* I’m looking at this organization because it seems to be the opposing head to the current president – I’d love to be corrected or educated otherwise on this area.

Basic principles the Tea Party has taken appear to be very divisive, particularly along religious boundaries. I don’t even want to go into their views on issues like abortion rights, immigration, gay marriage and other fundamental issues that the rest of the modern world has come to terms with and have moved beyond.

It sounds very twenty-first-century-medieval. I used to listen to some of this stuff and ignore it as silly – But, I get the feeling it’s not silly. That it is actually a deal-breaker.

Time travel is fun, when it doesn’t involve politicians with strange views taking entire countries back in time.
